What’s it like to work in Munich?
Munich is often called the “German Silicon Valley,” so it’s no surprise that Google’s Munich’s office is the place to be for software engineers who want to push the limits on distributed systems, scale and performance. Here, we build global and local products and innovate at high scale. Google engineers are experts in C++, Java and Python and focus on some of these key areas:
Privacy
At Google, we are aware of the trust users place in us and our responsibility to protect our users privacy. Germany is a country that places special emphasis on users privacy and therefore it is no surprise that we build a team of engineers in Munich that specifically focus on the development of products and services that provide our users with more transparency and choice when using Google. The Munich team developed Google Dashboard which summarizes data for each product that you use and provides you direct links to control your personal settings.
Google Chrome
Google Chrome is a fast, simple and secure web browser. We have an engineering team in Munich that is part of our larger international Chrome effort and worked on features around Chrome privacy. With Chrome 4.1 we not only added automatic site translation features but also advanced privacy and content controls. For example, users can control how browser cookies, images, JavaScript, plug-ins and pop-ups are handled on a site by site basis.
Automotive
The Google Munich automotive team works together with the automotive industry worldwide to bring Google’s innovation and Google’s services into cars. As an example, Google Send to Car helps organize the world’s information and makes it accessible...in your car (see e.g. YouTube video from BMW and Mercedes or our recent blog post). We also have teamed up with Audi and have launched Google Earth in the navigation system of their latest A8 (see our blog post) and there are many other ideas in our labs and cars on the drawing board that have not hit the road quite yet, but stay tuned for more.
Engineering Productivity
Google Munich has a team that specifically works on internal productivity tools for all Google engineers worldwide. We also work on Code Search, a tool that allows all engineers and developers outside of Google to search through all the world’s publicly accessible source code.
City life
When Googlers in Munich need a break from work, our office’s central location is just footsteps away from some of the city’s highlights. We are close to the Marienplatz, Munich’s central square full of treasures dating back to the Middle Ages and the Englischer Garten, one of Europe’s largest urban public parks complete with shaded paths, ponds, jogging paths and horse trails.
